AMMA, A SAVIOUR TO THESE 400 STRAY DOGS IN DELHI
This story is about Pratima Devi, a 65-year-old rag picker, popularly known as Amma. She resides in a shack in Saket, South Delhi and earns Rs200 per day. She takes care of about 400 dogs every day. After she moved to Delhi about 30 years ago, she had started off working as a cook for a few households in the city. After a few years, she opened her cigarette shop in PVR Anupam Complex which was later broken down.
The dogs she started caring for grew in no time and she found herself taking care of about 400 dogs on daily basis. Pratima takes care of every need of the dogs. She feeds them twice in a day, gives them milk in the evening, and takes care of all their medical expenditure which includes vaccinations and medical treatments. IF any emergencies, she takes them to Friendicoes which is an animal welfare organization.
The story of Amma has reached far and large. A lot of dog lovers come to visit her and even offer their help to her. The people who visit Amma can even adopt puppies and dogs from her. Several dogs and puppies have found good homes because of Amma. Amma doesn’t have money to buy her own medicines but she does everything to take care of the dog. She works really hard day and night to earn a penny to care of the stray dogs.
Taking care of dogs and puppies is not something which is new to her. She was the same when she was in her village. She had few of her stray dogs whom she used to take care of and feed them regularly. All the stray dogs she feeds have now become an integral part of her life and her family members.
