Research report

Dog food price in India, October 2026: the Bonbeno Price Index reads 72 seller listings of Pedigree, Drools and Royal Canin to the rupee, finds the same bag priced 34 percent apart, Rs 108 to Rs 1,078 a kilogram across three tiers, and a per-kilogram rate the law requires on the pack that only one seller prints

Every price on this page was read from a seller's own product data or statutory listing block on 8 and 9 October 2026, with the URL it came from, the pack weight it was divided by, and whether the bag could be bought that day. The index covers 72 listings of plain packs from eight sellers across three price tiers, the first edition of a series Bonbeno will repeat each quarter. It finds a 20 kg bag of the same Indian food priced from Rs 2,164 to Rs 2,899 depending on the shop, three sellers pricing an imported brand within one rupee of each other on about forty products, a 15 kg bag that costs more than the 20 kg of the same recipe, and a unit sale price rule that has required a per-kilogram figure on the pack since 2022 and that one marketplace reproduces online.

The data behind this report

One row per seller observation of one plain pack. Shopify sellers' figures are read from the shop's own products.json variant data; Amazon.in figures from each ASIN's own listing with the delivery location set to Mumbai 400001, because Amazon prices and stock are location-dependent. Price per kilogram is the price divided by the declared net weight. 'not stated' means the listing showed no payable price that day; a figure shown only in a variant picker on an out-of-stock listing is not recorded. Bonus-weight packs, multipacks and sachets under 200 g are excluded from the rows and discussed in the report. The Pedigree 20 kg and 10 kg rows are proven same-pack by EAN barcode; every other group is matched on line, life stage and declared weight, which is evidence of identity rather than proof, because no Drools or Royal Canin seller publishes a barcode.

Rupees per kilogram at the cheapest in-stock seller, each brand's volume packs, 8 and 9 October 2026. Drools and Pedigree from Amazon.in (marketplace seller ETrade Online) and Petsworld; Royal Canin from VetAllies. The tiers are price bands, not a judgement of quality: this report compares what a kilogram costs and nothing else. Amazon.in, Drools Optimum Performance Adult…

The cheapest kilogram of dry dog food in India in October 2026 was Drools Optimum Performance Adult, 20 kg at Rs 2,164 on Amazon.in, Rs 108.20 per kg, and the dearest in stock was Royal Canin Mini Puppy, 800 g at Rs 862 on the same marketplace, Rs 1,077.50 per kg Amazon.in, Royal Canin Mini Puppy Dry Food. Between them sit the three tiers the index tracks: economy, where Drools and Pedigree volume packs run Rs 108.20 to Rs 222.30 per kg; mid, where Pedigree's PRO line runs Rs 324.70 to Rs 343.80; and premium, where Royal Canin runs Rs 623.33 at its largest pack to over Rs 1,000 at its smallest VetAllies, Royal Canin collection. The median in-stock price per kg of packs of 10 kg and above was Rs 133.82 for Drools across ten listings, Rs 210.30 for Pedigree across seventeen and Rs 690.80 for Royal Canin across eleven, so at volume the imported brand costs about five times the cheaper Indian one and three times the dearer.

Two things the table makes visible that no price list does. Stock status changes the answer: on the Drools 20 kg the two dearest sellers were out of stock, so the three prices a buyer could pay were Rs 2,164, Rs 2,542 and Rs 2,635, and Amazon's marketplace seller undercuts the cheapest Shopify shop by 14.9 percent Supertails, Drools Optimum Performance…; on the Pedigree 20 kg, Petsworld and ShakeHands matched to the rupee at Rs 3,315 and both were out of stock. And the spread is a property of the brand: 21 to 34 percent on the Indian economy packs, 6 percent on PRO, 3 to 16 percent on Royal Canin, where three of the five sellers barely differ at all.

Economy tier: Drools and Pedigree, Rs 108 to Rs 222 a kilogram at volume, and one bag with seven prices

The two Indian-made brands are where the saving is, because the same bag is priced a fifth to a third apart depending on the shop.

Drools: Rs 2,164 to Rs 2,899 for one 20 kg bag

Drools Optimum Performance Adult 20 kg was listed at Rs 2,164 by Amazon's marketplace seller ETrade Online, Rs 2,542 by Supertails, Rs 2,635 by Petsworld, Rs 2,728 by Zigly (out of stock) and Rs 2,899 by Sukadev Animal Care (out of stock), a 34.0 percent spread Supertails, Drools Optimum Performance… Petsworld, Drools Optimum Performance Adult… Sukadev Animal Care (petvetcare.in). The Amazon listing read 'Only 1 left in stock' beside '600+ bought in past month', so the cheapest price in the index was also the thinnest. The 10 kg of the same line was far tighter, Rs 1,311 to Rs 1,399, with Amazon and Supertails at exactly Rs 1,311 Supertails, Drools Optimum Performance…. The brand's standard Chicken and Egg Adult line ran Rs 3,144 to Rs 3,495 at 20 kg, all three sellers in stock, and only one of three sellers had the 10 kg to sell Heads Up For Tails Supertails, Drools Chicken and Egg Adult….

Pedigree: the one bag whose identity is proven, priced seven ways

One bag, seven prices: Pedigree Adult Chicken & Vegetables 20 kg, EAN 8906002486434, 8 October 2026, Rs 3,900 MRP01,0002,0003,0004,000Amazon.in (ETrade Online)3,115Petsworld (out of stock)3,315ShakeHands (out of stock)3,315Supertails3,319Zigly3,432Heads Up For Tails3,627Sukadev Animal Care3,777
One bag, seven prices: Pedigree Adult Chicken & Vegetables 20 kg, EAN 8906002486434, 8 October 2026, Rs 3,900 MRP. Supertails, Heads Up For Tails and Amazon.in all report the same EAN barcode for this pack, so this is one physical product at seven prices, not seven similar listings. Per kilogram: Rs 155.75 to Rs 188.85. Amazon.in, Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Food

Pedigree Adult Chicken & Vegetables 20 kg, maximum retail price Rs 3,900, was priced from Rs 3,115 at Amazon's marketplace seller to Rs 3,777 at Sukadev Animal Care, a 21.3 percent spread, and the Rs 662 gap between the two is what the shop costs, because Supertails, Heads Up For Tails and Amazon report the same EAN barcode 8906002486434 for the bag Supertails, Pedigree Chicken & Vegetables… Heads Up For Tails Sukadev Animal Care (petvetcare.in). Two sellers' statutory blocks give the bag's origin as 'Hungary/Thailand/India' and its marketer as Mars International India at Darya Ganj, New Delhi, so even the proven pack is not one country's product. The 10 kg, EAN 8906002484874, ran Rs 1,828 at ShakeHands to Rs 2,223 at Heads Up For Tails, 21.6 percent, with Amazon's own listing out of stock in both the English and Hindi renders and no price returned Amazon.in, Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Food. Supertails and Sukadev Animal Care landed at exactly Rs 2,151 on that pack, the third pair of sellers in this index to match to the rupee; the report states the match and asserts no mechanism, because a matched Pedigree PRO price in August had come apart by October.

The brand's own per-kilogram figure disagrees with its sellers

pedigree.in states that 'the 20 kg pack works out to roughly Rs 20 per 100 g', which is Rs 200 per kg, on the day its seven listed sellers priced the same bag at Rs 155.75 to Rs 188.85 per kg Amazon.in, Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Food. The brand's figure is a tenth to a quarter above every price a buyer could actually pay, and it sits under a heading that reads 'Best Value for Money Dry Dog Food'. The brand's product page gives the typical analysis, crude protein 20 percent, crude fat 10 percent, crude fibre 5 percent, and no energy figure.

The line with the premium name: 51 percent dearer per kilogram on Pedigree, 31 percent cheaper on Drools

A buyer who assumes a performance or expert label means a dearer kilogram is right on one Indian brand and wrong on the other.

Pedigree PRO Expert Nutrition Active Adult Large Breed 10 kg, Rs 3,247 to Rs 3,438 across four sellers, costs Rs 324.70 per kg at its cheapest, which is 51 percent more than the standard Chicken & Vegetables 10 kg at Rs 215.10 per kg from the same seller on the same day Supertails, Pedigree Chicken & Vegetables…. The premium had narrowed from 63 percent in August, because PRO fell at Supertails rather than the standard line rising. Drools runs the other way: Optimum Performance Adult 20 kg at Rs 108.20 to Rs 144.95 per kg is 31.2 percent cheaper per kilogram than the brand's standard Chicken and Egg Adult 20 kg at Rs 157.20 to Rs 174.75, comparing the cheapest of each. These are two different recipes on each brand, not two grades of one, so this is a price observation and not a like-for-like quality comparison; it is printed because the name on the bag is the first thing a buyer reads and on these two brands it predicts the price in opposite directions.

A smaller worked example from the same files: Supertails listed a PRO '6 kg (2 x 3 kg)' pack at Rs 2,172, Rs 362.00 per kg, when two 3 kg packs bought singly from the same seller at Rs 1,038 each would have been Rs 2,076, Rs 346.00 per kg; the multipack was Rs 96 dearer than its own components. It is one case, recorded as one case.

Premium tier: Royal Canin, Rs 623 to Rs 1,078 a kilogram, three sellers within a rupee, and a breed premium of 7 to 23 percent

The imported brand is where the saving is NOT between the big three sellers, because they do not differ, and IS between them and the other two.

Three sellers, about forty products, one rupee apart

On 9 October 2026 Zigly, Supertails and Heads Up For Tails were priced within one rupee of each other on about forty separate Royal Canin products at once: Maxi Adult 10 kg at Rs 6,908 at all three, Rottweiler Adult 12 kg at Rs 10,243 at all three, Maxi Starter 15 kg at Rs 11,660, Pug Adult 3 kg at Rs 3,124, Mini Puppy 8 kg at Rs 6,820, Giant Adult 15 kg at Rs 10,604, and Maxi Puppy 4 kg at Rs 3,555, Rs 3,555 and Rs 3,556 Supertails, Royal Canin collection Heads Up For Tails, Royal Canin collection. Zigly's figures repeatedly carry paise, Rs 2,806.79, Rs 10,577.81, Rs 1,029.19, which is the signature of a percentage computed off a base figure rather than a price typed by hand, and the base it computes to is within a rupee of the other two. The pattern is systematic, forty simultaneous matches are not chance, and the report still asserts no price-setting, because a single list price with a conventional discount applied by each seller independently would produce exactly this result, and the list price is not published on those pages. What it means for a buyer is plain: comparing those three on Royal Canin is close to pointless.

VetAllies is cheapest on about 38 of 45 products, and the exceptions are large

VetAllies, advertising '15% OFF' on its Royal Canin collection, was cheapest on roughly 38 of the 45 product groups with two or more sellers, typically 8 to 15 percent below the three-seller cluster, with Petsworld between the two Petsworld, Royal Canin collection. The exceptions are the reason to check rather than assume. On Maxi Starter 15 kg VetAllies was the dearest of five at Rs 12,587.50 while Petsworld was cheapest at Rs 11,262; on Golden Retriever Adult 12 kg Petsworld was Rs 12,728 against VetAllies' Rs 8,840, 44 percent above, the widest single-product spread found on the brand; and on Medium Puppy 1 kg, Rottweiler Adult 3 kg, Mini Puppy 2 kg and Shih Tzu Adult 500 g another seller beat it Petsworld, Royal Canin collection Heads Up For Tails, Royal Canin collection Zigly, Royal Canin collection.

The breed-named food costs more than the size-band food for the same dog

For a large adult dog Royal Canin sells both a size food and a breed food, and at volume from the cheapest seller the breed food is dearer per kilogram: Maxi Adult 10 kg at Rs 650.30 against Beagle Adult 12 kg at Rs 697.75, German Shepherd Adult 11 kg at Rs 734.09, Golden Retriever Adult 12 kg at Rs 736.67, Labrador Retriever Adult 12 kg at Rs 757.92 and Rottweiler Adult 12 kg at Rs 798.75, a premium of 7 to 23 percent. Whether a breed formulation is worth it is a question for a tested review and this index does not answer it; that the premium exists and how large it is belongs in front of a buyer before the choice. The floor on the brand was Giant Adult 15 kg at Rs 609.20 per kg and Maxi Adult 15 kg at Rs 623.33, the ceiling Shih Tzu Adult 500 g at Rs 1,170 to Rs 1,196 and Pug Adult 1.5 kg at Rs 1,144: small breed plus small pack is the dearest combination Supertails, Royal Canin collection. Six of seven Royal Canin listings on Amazon.in declare the country of origin as France and five name Royal Canin India Pvt Ltd at Goregaon East, Mumbai, Maharashtra as importer, so the whole tier is an imported price Amazon.in, Royal Canin Mini Adult Dog Dry…; Bonbeno's Royal Canin brand page has the statutory blocks.

Pack sizes: bigger is usually cheaper per kilo, and three brands gave three different answers

The per-kilogram figure has to be computed for every pack, because on one brand the ladder runs the wrong way and on another the bulk packs cannot be bought.

Pedigree Adult Chicken & Vegetables on Amazon.in by pack size, rupees per kilogram, delivery location Mumbai 400001, 8 October 2026050100150200250222.00249.17182.33243.20155.751 kg (Rs 222)1.2 kg (Rs 299)3 kg (Rs 547)15 kg (Rs 3,648)20 kg (Rs 3,115)
Pedigree Adult Chicken & Vegetables on Amazon.in by pack size, rupees per kilogram, delivery location Mumbai 400001, 8 October 2026. The 5.5 kg returned no price and the 10 kg was out of stock. The 15 kg bag cost Rs 533 more in total than the 20 kg of the same recipe on the same listing on the same day, a 56 percent premium per kilogram for the smaller bag. Amazon.in, Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Food

On Pedigree the pack ladder is not monotonic: Amazon's 15 kg at Rs 3,648 cost Rs 533 more than its 20 kg at Rs 3,115, for 5 kg less food, Rs 243.20 against Rs 155.75 per kg, and its 1.2 kg was dearer per kilogram than its 1 kg Amazon.in, Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Food. These are plain single packs of one recipe, not bundles. On Royal Canin the ladder runs exactly as a buyer would assume: VetAllies' Maxi Adult falls from Rs 765.00 per kg at 1 kg to Rs 722.50 at 4 kg, Rs 650.30 at 10 kg and Rs 623.33 at 15 kg, and its Mini Adult from Rs 871.25 at 800 g to Rs 680.00 at 8 kg. On Drools the two volume sizes a cost-conscious buyer would want could not be bought: Amazon's variant picker for the Puppy Chicken and Egg line showed a 10 kg at Rs 2,190 and a 20 kg at Rs 3,690, and each opened on its own listing as out of stock with no price, so neither is in the index. Among the payable Drools packs the ladder was ordinary, Rs 131.10 per kg at 10 kg down to Rs 108.20 at 20 kg Amazon.in, Drools Optimum Performance Adult….

A number in a variant picker is not a price

Twice in this index a volume pack showed a price in the size selector and no price on its own listing: Pedigree's 10 kg at Rs 1,899 and Drools' 10 kg and 20 kg at Rs 2,190 and Rs 3,690. None could be bought that day, and an out-of-stock picker figure is not a price. A per-kilogram table built from a picker publishes prices nobody can pay, and Google's own AI Overview for 'drools dog food price' does something close to it, quoting '10 kg - 15 kg+ bags: Rs 1,287 - Rs 2,790' with no stock status anywhere. Open the pack's own page before you divide.

Sachets distort the other way. Of 889 priced Drools variants across six Shopify sellers, 331 were 200 g or smaller, and they are dearer per kilogram than the volume packs, not cheaper: a Rs 10 sachet of Daily Nutrition Puppy is 50 g, Rs 200 per kg, and a Rs 9 sachet of Adult Nutrition is 40 g, Rs 225 per kg, against the 20 kg at Rs 108.20 ShakeHands, Pedigree Adult Chicken…. The Rs 10 sachet ranks first on Google for the brand's own name, so it is the first Drools price many buyers see.

What a month of dog food costs: Rs 1,729 to Rs 7,357 for a 30 kg dog, from each brand's own feeding guide

The monthly figure is the price per kg multiplied by the grams the brand itself says to feed, so it is only as good as the guide.

Cost of feeding a 30 kg adult dog for 30 days, grams a day from the brand's own feeding guide, price per kilogram from this index Pedigree India, 'Feeding Guidelines'

Pedigree's own feeding guidelines give a 30 kg dog 370 g of dry food a day, 11.1 kg a month, which at the cheapest in-stock price is Rs 1,729 and at the cheapest Shopify seller Rs 1,842; Royal Canin's India page gives a 30 kg Maxi Adult dog 355 g a day at medium activity, 10.65 kg a month, Rs 6,638 at VetAllies' 15 kg price and Rs 7,357 at the three-seller cluster's 10 kg price Royal Canin India Amazon.in, Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Food VetAllies, Royal Canin collection. So a 30 kg dog fed Royal Canin costs about Rs 4,900 to Rs 5,600 a month more than one fed Pedigree, and the gap between the two brands is larger than the gap between the dearest and cheapest seller of either. The Drools row is an assumption and is labelled one: the brand's site lists the Optimum line without a feeding guide, an energy figure or an analysis, and the seller pages that carry one returned rate-limit or forbidden responses on 2 November 2026.

The index the plan called for was per kilogram and per 1,000 kilocalories, and the second cannot yet be built from Indian listings. IS 11968:2019, the voluntary Indian standard for complete pet food, asks for 'Metabolizable energy (calculated), in kcal/kg' on every container, and the BIS page for the standard shows zero licences Bureau of Indian Standards. Royal Canin's India product page prints protein and fat and no energy figure; pedigree.in prints none; one seller's listing of a Pedigree bonus pack prints 'Metabolisable Energy: 390 kcal per 100 g (calculated basis typical analysis values)', which would make the cheapest Pedigree kilogram Rs 39.94 per 1,000 kcal Pedigree India, 'PEDIGREE Chicken… ShakeHands, Pedigree Adult Chicken &…. Yet the brand's own feeding page gives a 20 kg dog 898 kilocalories and 275 g a day, which implies about 3,265 kcal per kg of food, not 3,900, so the two figures do not describe the same food or one of them is wrong. Until the pack panels are photographed, the index stays per kilogram and says so.

What moved since August: one Pedigree seller up 2.3 percent, one down 5.4, six unchanged, against 8.54 percent inflation in the pets division

The index's first delta is six weeks of Pedigree at four sellers, because that is the only brand with an August reading.

Of eight Pedigree seller-pack prices read in both August and October, six were unchanged to the rupee; Supertails raised the Adult 10 kg from Rs 2,103 to Rs 2,151, up 2.3 percent, and cut PRO 10 kg from Rs 3,438 to Rs 3,251, down 5.4 percent Petsworld, Pedigree Chicken & Vegetables… Zigly, Pedigree Chicken & Vegetables Dry… Heads Up For Tails. The August pair that matched to the rupee, Supertails and Zigly at Rs 2,103, came apart, and a new pair, Supertails and Sukadev Animal Care at Rs 2,151, appeared in its place; the three sellers that shared Rs 3,438 on PRO in August were down to one by October Heads Up For Tails. Online dog food prices, on this evidence, are sticky for weeks and then move at one shop.

The official index for the category moved faster. The Consumer Price Index division 09.3, 'Garden products and pets', rose 8.54 percent year on year in January 2026, 6.62 percent rural and 10.25 percent urban, against 2.75 percent for all items. The division bundles pets with garden products and the official release does not separate them, which is the gap a per-product index fills: it cannot say what pet inflation was, but it can say that a 10 kg bag of the most-bought Indian dog food cost the same at three of four shops in October as in August.

The border price: imported dog and cat food landed at USD 2.33 a kilogram in 2025, and Thailand ships 63 percent of it

The customs record is the one public price series for pet food in India, and the import price is one before duty, freight, margin and tax.

India imported 59,166 tonnes of dog and cat food put up for retail sale in 2025 at a declared value of USD 138.1 million, USD 2.33 a kilogram, up from USD 1.83 in 2015, and Thailand shipped 63.4 percent of the value, Italy 8.5 and France 7.9. The Department of Commerce's own data bank puts the financial year 2025-26 at Rs 1,244.11 crore, USD 140.96 million, 4.51 percent above the year before. A kilogram that crosses the border at about USD 2.33 and sells at Rs 623 to Rs 1,078 at Royal Canin's price points has had duty, freight, the importer, the seller and tax added between the two figures; this report does not have the duty and margin chain and does not estimate it. What the trade record does settle is where the shelf comes from: Thailand is where Mars makes Pedigree for export, and the Pedigree pack sold in India carries, on two sellers' statutory blocks, 'Country of Origin: Hungary/Thailand/India', while Royal Canin's declares France Amazon.in, Royal Canin Maxi Puppy Dry Food. Bonbeno's pet products report has the full trade series.

What the rules require on the pack: an MRP, a unit sale price per kilogram since 2022, and an energy figure only if the maker chooses

Three documents govern what a price on a bag of dog food must say. Two are mandatory and one is voluntary.

The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 apply to every retail pack of 25 kg or less and require on it the name and address of the manufacturer, packer and importer, the net quantity, the retail sale price and a consumer-complaints contact. Since the 2021 amendment they also require a unit sale price: G.S.R. 779(E) of 2 November 2021 inserted sub-rule 6(11), 'The unit sale price shall be declared as ... "Rs.__ per kg" for pre-packaged commodities with net quantity of commodity more or equal to one kilogram', and 'Rs.__ per g' below a kilogram. G.S.R. 226(E) of 28 March 2022 moved the start date to 1 October 2022, substituted the sub-rule to read 'The unit sale price in rupees, rounded off to the nearest two decimal place, shall be declared on every pre-packaged commodities', and exempted packs 'in which retail sale price is equal to the unit sale price'. So every bag of dog food of a kilogram or more sold in India has, by law, carried a per-kilogram price on its label for four years. Of the eight sellers in this index, one reproduces it online: Amazon prints a unit rate beside the price, Rs 13.71 and Rs 17.17 per 100 g on its Drools store page, and the seven Shopify shops publish a per-kg figure only where Shopify computes one itself, as Supertails did on the Pedigree 20 kg Supertails, Pedigree Chicken & Vegetables….

Two MRPs for one pack

ShakeHands states the maximum retail price of the Pedigree Adult 10 kg as Rs 2,150. Petsworld, Zigly, Supertails, Sukadev Animal Care and Heads Up For Tails all state Rs 2,390. The MRP is printed on the pack under the Packaged Commodities Rules and is not a seller's choice, so either one seller is misstating it or two pack generations with different printed prices are on sale at once. This index cannot tell which, and it means ShakeHands' discount, computed against its own MRP, is not comparable with the others' as a percentage. Read the sticker price, not the percentage.

The energy figure is the one declaration the maker may leave off. IS 11968:2019, 'Pet Food for Dogs and Cats, Specification', lists metabolisable energy in kcal/kg among the markings each container shall carry, and its own clause 6.2.2.1 says a conforming product 'may' be certified and 'may' carry the standard mark; the Bureau of Indian Standards page for the standard shows no licence against it Bureau of Indian Standards. Pet food sits outside the Food Safety and Standards Act, so there is no mandatory Indian labelling standard to put the figure on the pack, which is why a per-kilocalorie index cannot be built from the shelf and why a Google People Also Ask box on an Indian brand's name asks about an American ingredient-naming rule, the 95 percent rule, that India does not have.

What the search results tell a buyer instead: a nine-row price table with no per-kilogram figure, and a directory price wrong by a factor of five

The pages that rank for a dog food price in India answer in pack prices, sale prices and sachets, which is what this index was built to replace.

  • Google's AI Overview for 'drools dog food price' gives a range of 'roughly Rs 200 to Rs 3,300' and a table of nine pack sizes against prices, and not one figure in it is per kilogram, while a question in the People Also Ask box under it reads 'How much does 1 kg of drools dog food cost?'. It also folds a bonus pack, '4.2 kg pack (e.g., 3 kg + 1.2 kg free)', into the ladder without flagging it.
  • The same Overview for 'royal canin dog food price' says large 10 kg to 20 kg bags run 'Rs 4,500 to Rs 10,000+' while the Supertails citation it displays beneath reads 'Royal Canin Maxi Puppy Dog Dry Food Rs 14,819 (20kg)'. It contradicts its own source and carries no stock status.
  • Justdial, holding four of the top ten places on Royal Canin's price queries, prints 'Giant Adult Dog Food (15 kg) Rs 1.88 K - Rs 2 K', which is Rs 125 to Rs 133 per kg against Rs 609 to Rs 1,078 at every seller read, low by a factor of five to eight.
  • Flipkart's first result for the Pedigree price query is a 10 kg at Rs 2,490 struck through to Rs 2,084, labelled 'Big Billion Days Price' and 'Sponsored', on the Chicken and Milk puppy recipe, a promotional price during a named sale event on a different product from the adult bag it would be compared with. Named-sale prices are not in this index.
  • The one page that does compute per kilo, a coupon site's reading of 214 Amazon listings on 19 September 2026, found 86 dry dog foods from Rs 114 to Rs 1,225 a kilo with a median of Rs 237, and put Pedigree's 10 kg chicken bag at Rs 200 a kilo; three weeks later this index read the same pack at six sellers from Rs 182.80 to Rs 222.30, so a single-marketplace figure sits inside the range and tells a buyer nothing about where in it to shop.
  • No ranking page states whether the bag was in stock, and this index found that the stock flag changed the cheapest seller on three of the twelve packs in its headline table.

The ranking page's own headings ask 'So what should you buy?' and cover wet food, treats and the cat shelf, which this index does not: it is dry dog food, three brands, plain packs, and it will stay that narrow until the next edition adds a brand with the same rigour.

What to do with the index before you buy a bag

Six rules, each bought with a defect this index found.

  1. Divide the price by the kilograms every time, and open the pack's own page to do it. Pedigree's 15 kg cost more than its 20 kg, a Drools 20 kg showed a price that could not be paid, and a sachet at Rs 10 is Rs 200 a kilogram. A 20 kg bag is only the cheapest kilogram if the dog finishes it before a humid monsoon month spoils the last of it, so size the bag to the dog as well as to the price.
  2. On an Indian brand, compare sellers; on Royal Canin, compare only VetAllies and Petsworld against the rest. The same Drools bag was 34 percent apart; the three big Royal Canin sellers were a rupee apart on forty products.
  3. Check the stock flag before the price. On the Pedigree 20 kg the two cheapest Shopify sellers were out of stock, and the cheapest in-stock bag was Rs 3,319, not Rs 3,315.
  4. Read the sticker MRP on the pack, not a seller's discount percentage, because two sellers printed two different MRPs for one bag.
  5. Price a month, not a bag, from the brand's own feeding guide: a 30 kg dog costs Rs 1,729 a month on the cheapest Pedigree kilogram and Rs 6,638 on the cheapest Royal Canin one.
  6. Treat the name on the bag as a name. PRO was 51 percent dearer than standard on Pedigree and Optimum Performance was 31 percent cheaper than standard on Drools Petsworld, Drools Chicken and Egg Adult Dog…; neither direction says anything about the food.

What this index does not measure

It is one day's reading of three brands at eight online sellers, and every limit follows from that.

  • Three brands, dry food, plain packs. No wet food, no cat food, no treats, and none of the other Indian brands a buyer sees beside these three; the coupon site's Rs 114 Purepet kilogram is cheaper than anything here, and Purepet is a Drools company line this edition did not read.
  • Online prices only, Amazon from one delivery location. DMart, Blinkit, 1mg and a neighbourhood shop are different channels; Amazon's prices and stock depend on the PIN code, and every figure here is for Mumbai 400001, so a buyer in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata or Ahmedabad may see a different price and a different stock flag on the same listing.
  • Two days in October. Pedigree has an August reading; Drools and Royal Canin have one point each, so nothing can be said yet about their direction.
  • Same-pack identity is proven only for Pedigree's 20 kg and 10 kg, by barcode. Every Drools and Royal Canin group is matched on line, stage and declared weight, and no seller of either publishes an EAN.
  • Per kilogram, not per kilocalorie. No Indian listing read for the three foods compared states a metabolisable energy figure, and the one that does is a seller's line on a bonus pack that disagrees with the brand's own feeding arithmetic.
  • The matched prices are stated, not explained. Forty Royal Canin products within a rupee across three sellers is systematic; the report does not say why, because the list price that would settle it is not published.

How this index was built

The sellers' own data, the sellers' own pages, and nothing summarised by anyone else.

  1. Shopify sellers were read from their own variant data at each shop's collections/<brand>/products.json: exact price, SKU code, stock flag and, where published, the EAN barcode and Shopify's own unit price. Supertails, Petsworld, Zigly, Heads Up For Tails, ShakeHands and Sukadev Animal Care were read for Pedigree on 8 October 2026 and for Drools on 9 October, and Zigly, Supertails, Heads Up For Tails, VetAllies and Petsworld for Royal Canin on 9 October (1,327 priced Royal Canin variants, 889 Drools) VetAllies, Royal Canin collection. This removes the error a regex over a rendered product grid makes, which attaches the nearest price to the wrong product.
  2. Amazon.in was read listing by listing, with the delivery location set to Mumbai 400001 and, for Pedigree, in both the English and Hindi renders, because Amazon can leave the statutory block out of one of them; each variant ASIN was then opened on its own page before its price was used Amazon.in, Drools Optimum Performance Adult….
  3. Excluded from every comparison: bonus-weight packs ('20 kg + 2 kg Inside Free', '3 kg + 1.2 kg free'), multipacks, sachets under 200 g, named-sale-event prices, Royal Canin's veterinary range, and any figure from a variant picker, an AI summary or a directory listing.
  4. Price per kilogram is price divided by declared net weight; one Amazon Royal Canin listing that calls itself 1 kg, 1,000 g and 800 g in three fields is in the dataset without a per-kg figure. The dataset was built by `build_rows.py` in the research folder from the three brand price files; the summary arithmetic the report quotes was recomputed by the same script.
  5. The rules were read from the Goa Legal Metrology department's copies of G.S.R. 779(E) and G.S.R. 226(E), the 2011 rules from a full-text copy, IS 11968:2019 from the standard's text and the BIS licence page, the CPI division from the National Statistics Office's January 2026 release, and the trade series from UN Comtrade and the Department of Commerce's Tradestat Department of Consumer Affairs The Legal Metrology Bureau of Indian Standards, IS 11968:2019 Ministry of Statistics and Programme… UN Comtrade Database, India (reporter 699) Department of Commerce.
  6. The next edition repeats the same read in January 2027 against the same URLs, adds a fourth brand, and reports the quarter's movement seller by seller.

Common questions about dog food price in India

How much does 1 kg of dog food cost?

From Rs 108.20 to Rs 1,077.50 in October 2026, depending on the brand and the pack. A kilogram of Drools Optimum Performance in a 20 kg bag was Rs 108.20 on Amazon.in and Rs 127.10 at Supertails; Pedigree Adult Chicken & Vegetables in a 20 kg bag was Rs 155.75 to Rs 188.85 across seven sellers; Pedigree PRO was Rs 324.70 to Rs 343.80; and Royal Canin ran Rs 623.33 for Maxi Adult 15 kg at VetAllies up to Rs 1,077.50 for Mini Puppy 800 g on Amazon.

What is the cheapest dog food per kg on Amazon India?

Among the three brands this index read, Drools Optimum Performance Adult 20 kg at Rs 2,164, Rs 108.20 per kg, sold by the marketplace seller ETrade Online with the delivery location set to Mumbai 400001 on 9 October 2026, with 'Only 1 left in stock'. A coupon site's reading of 86 Amazon dry dog food listings on 19 September 2026 found a Purepet 10 kg at Rs 1,143, Rs 114 a kilo, which this index did not read because Purepet is outside its three brands.

How much does it cost to feed a dog per month in India?

For a 30 kg adult dog fed from the brand's own guide, about Rs 1,729 a month on Pedigree Adult Chicken & Vegetables at the cheapest in-stock kilogram (370 g a day, 11.1 kg a month, Rs 155.75 per kg) and about Rs 6,638 on Royal Canin Maxi Adult (355 g a day at medium activity, 10.65 kg, Rs 623.33 per kg), rising to Rs 7,357 at the three big sellers' 10 kg price. A smaller dog eats proportionately less: Pedigree's guide gives a 10 kg dog 165 g a day and a 20 kg dog 275 g.

Is a 20 kg bag of dog food cheaper per kilo than a 10 kg one?

Usually, and not always. Drools Optimum Performance fell from Rs 131.10 per kg at 10 kg to Rs 108.20 at 20 kg, and Royal Canin Maxi Adult from Rs 650.30 at 10 kg to Rs 623.33 at 15 kg. But on Amazon.in Pedigree's 15 kg bag at Rs 3,648 cost Rs 533 more in total than its 20 kg at Rs 3,115, Rs 243.20 against Rs 155.75 per kg, and its 1.2 kg was dearer per kilogram than its 1 kg. Divide every pack.

Why is vegetarian dog food more expensive than chicken?

This index did not read a vegetarian pack, so it cannot say. The coupon site that ranks for the query put Pedigree's 10 kg 100 percent vegetarian bag at Rs 254 a kilo against Rs 200 for its chicken bag on Amazon on 19 September 2026; the reason is not on either listing, and the brand's pages give no cost breakdown. The next edition will read the vegetarian line at the same sellers.

Is wet food or dry food better value for a pet?

This index covers dry food only, so it cannot compare the two on its own data. What it can say is that a per-kilogram comparison between wet and dry is misleading on its face, because wet food is mostly water and the law's unit sale price is per kilogram or per gram of the pack as sold, not per kilocalorie, and no Indian listing read states a kilocalorie figure for either.

What is the price of Royal Canin?

Rs 623.33 to Rs 1,196 per kg across the 45 dog foods with two or more sellers on 9 October 2026. The volume end is Giant Adult 15 kg at Rs 609.20 per kg and Maxi Adult 15 kg at Rs 623.33 at VetAllies; Maxi Adult 10 kg was Rs 6,503 at VetAllies and Rs 6,908 at Zigly, Supertails and Heads Up For Tails; Labrador Retriever Adult 12 kg Rs 9,095 to Rs 10,182; Mini Adult 800 g Rs 697 to Rs 810; and Shih Tzu Adult 500 g the dearest at up to Rs 1,196 per kg.

How much does 1 kg of drools dog food cost?

Rs 108.20 at the cheapest, for the 20 kg Optimum Performance Adult bag on Amazon.in, and Rs 127.10 to Rs 144.95 for the same bag at four Shopify sellers; Rs 131.10 to Rs 139.90 for the 10 kg; and Rs 157.20 to Rs 187.00 for the Chicken and Egg Adult line at 20 kg and 10 kg. A 50 g sachet at Rs 10 is Rs 200 per kg and a 40 g sachet at Rs 9 is Rs 225, so the sachet that ranks first for the brand's name is the dearest Drools per kilogram, not the cheapest.
