Browse by group
To narrow 617 guides quickly, start from a group rather than the alphabet. Each one compares its breeds side by side on heat tolerance and published Indian price.
Heat tolerant57 guidesThe breeds rated 4 and 5 out of 5 for heat tolerance, and what the evidence behind those ratings actually says.
Heat sensitive446 guidesThe breeds rated 1 and 2 out of 5, why they struggle, and what the evidence says an owner can do about it.
Indian breeds23 guidesEvery native breed of the subcontinent, researched from primary sources rather than repeated from other listicles.
Flat-faced8 guidesThe breeds whose shortened airway is the single most decision-relevant fact about owning them in India.
Sighthounds13 guidesIndia has more native sighthounds than any other country, and they cost a fraction of the imports.
Short-legged11 guidesThe short legs and the disc disease come from the same gene, and the usual advice about stairs is not what the data says.
Giant breeds9 guidesWhat a 60 kg dog actually costs to feed in India, and how short these lifespans really are.
Toy breeds14 guidesSmall breeds done honestly, including the teacup category that no registry recognises and Indian law prohibits producing.
Spitz breeds24 guidesThe group Indian sellers mix up most, and the measurements that actually tell them apart.
Bull breeds13 guidesWhat the law actually says in India, and which of these breeds the joint data really favours.
Apartment dogs81 guidesThe breeds rated 4 and 5 out of 5 for apartment living, and what the rating does and does not promise.
Terriers30 guidesSmall does not mean easy. The terrier group is the most consistently underestimated on the site.
Gundogs16 guidesIndia's most popular family dogs, and the two problems the popularity hides.
Guardians41 guidesThe group where the buying decision is about handling and liability, not just about the dog.
Scenthounds25 guidesBred to follow a scent and ignore you doing it. That one fact decides most of what ownership is like.
Types, not breeds61 guidesNames that are used like breeds, sold like breeds, and that no register anywhere holds as a breed.
Pointing dogs42 guidesThe breeds bred to find game and freeze on it, almost none of which can lawfully be bought in India.
Herding dogs63 guidesBred to move stock, not guard it. The drive arrives in an Indian flat whether or not there is anything to herd.
Extinct breeds44 guidesDogs that no longer exist, known from bones, carvings, stud books or eyewitnesses, and why every profile that prices one has invented it.
Hairless8 guidesTwo different mutations, one welfare arithmetic, and a sun routine in place of the grooming bill nobody quotes.
Pinschers and Schnauzers10 guidesThe FCI's Pinscher and Schnauzer section, the stable-ratting history behind it, and the two members that became police dogs.
Mediterranean primitives8 guidesPrick-eared rabbit hunters that work by nose, ear and eye, filed as primitive rather than sighthound, sold on an Egyptian story the genetics rejects.
Curs and treeing dogs13 guidesWorking dogs of the rural South written into United Kennel Club standards around one job, finding game and holding it at the tree.Published guides

ZerdavaA medium Turkish spitz hunting dog from the eastern Black Sea coast, measured properly in a study of 100 dogs that almost nobody can find. How to read these guides
Every breed page follows the same structure, so two breeds can be compared directly rather than read end to end.
- Trait ratings out of 5 sit near the top, including heat tolerance, which almost no other breed site rates and which matters more in India than anything except temperament.
- Price sections compare published sources rather than quoting one figure, because Indian breed prices disagree wildly between sellers.
- Health sections cite primary literature where it exists, and say plainly where it does not. Indian breeds have no equivalent of the large cohort studies that exist for popular Western breeds.
- Every guide ends with adoption, because for many households it is the better answer and nobody pays us to say otherwise.
